Converting from iTunes to Banshee

itunes is great, don’t get me wrong, but I use linux at home 99.99% of the time.  Lately all I boot into windows for on my main rig is to sync my ipod with itunes.  I already have the songs rated and smart playlists and straight playlists setup, it seems I’m married to itunes.  I really like Banshee and have my whole library in there as well, just no ratings or playlists.  I know I can sync my ipod with Banshee but without all the other stuff, it’s pointless.

I knew someone must have had the same dilemma I did when it came to switching, so I did a google search and came across this wonderful post By Andrew Sterling Hanenkamp Converting from iTunes to Banshee – Contentment.

I’m running the perl script right now to convert my itunes library to Banshee, then I’ll swiftly recreate my smart playlists, and be on my way.

EDIT:

Looks like I jumped the shark, New in Banshee 1.5.2 itunes Import.

This Year in Google: The 2009 Edition [Google]

This is pretty terrifying when you realize all the work they’ve accomplished in just 12 months.  What will they do in the next 12 months is anyone’s guess.  Buy more companies, revolutionize operating systems like they have with browsers?  Ha ha, not likely.  Have you seen Chrome OS, i’d rather use windows NT, I’ll keep my Ubuntu thank you.  Or will Google take all our emails and personal information and post it on a website as a big fuck you, and then move to their secret moon base.  I’m sure they will just grow as a company and come out with some more products we can’t live without, further their development on Android and Chromeish things, continue to poorly transcribe my voice mails for me and hopefully expand their Data Liberation Front to lull us into a sense of peace.

I must of course end this with, well we know where sky net will come from.  ;)

U.S. government sets up online app store

This sounds like such…  Jesus christ this is a bad idea..

“Also on Tuesday, Google announced the creation of a “government cloud,” in which public data will be stored on Google computer servers by 2010. According to a Google blog post, this dedicated space will serve the needs of federal, state and local governments.”

Review:The Palm Pre

I decided after about a two months of using the Pre, I’d write up my thoughts for what it’s worth.

I’m not a Palm fanboy, I’ve owned a few Palm Pilots, an Treo 700wx and the 800w, which I liked, but were missing something, also on the last two, I don’t care what you say, windows mobile sucks.  I should never have to open a task manager to close an application.  This review might be a little slanted because I am a bit of a Linux fanboy, only because it works and works well. Disagree?  Well it’s taking over the server, internet appliance and mobile device market fast that’s for sure.

The Palm Pre is a great little device, I say device and not phone, because it’s more like 5% phone and 95% awesome.  It’s beautiful and feels great in your hand.  I have a protective plastic case for it, but keep taking it off because it kind of ruins the feel of the phone.  Sure it has it’s quirks, like the battery life sucks, and the slide out keyboard is a bit small for me and has some wiggle to it  I deal with the battery by plugging it up to my computer, wall charger or Motorola P970.  WebOS is very user friendly and intuitive, it runs on top of linux which allows for a lot of hacking and tweaks, such as the latest Virtual Keyboard patch.  The folks at WebOs Internals have been doing a great job of finding all kinds of things to do or change on the pre with patches.  Then you have all the Home Brew apps from Precentral.com with their Home Brew Catalog, Pimp My Pre with their preload application.  Filecoaster rocks Preware rocks even harder with the ability to add and update apps from the Home Brew Catalog(Which after the lastest update Filecoaster can do also), Pimp My Pre, and WebOS-Internals, as well as add some tweaks like the Virtual Keyboard, using your camera flash as a super bright flashlight, viewing sms, email, pdfs in landscape mode, and more..  With the latest build of WebOs Quick Install you can add most of these tweaks with a click of a button.

As of this post there are 193 apps in the Home Brew Catalog on Precentral.net when I bought my pre there were 20 apps, not to mention the Home Brew catalog also reached one million downloads (since they’ve been counting).  Just in the last two days it’s been reported through a leak that the 1.2 update, 1.1 came out right after I got mine, that led notifications are coming, which means no more turning on your screen to check for new notifications.

Because I’m a linux guy, I love that I can ssh into my pre from any where I get an internet connection, over the Pre’s Wifi or EVDO connection.  One of my favorite Home brew apps is My tether, sure it requires rooting your Pre, but then you have a phone that can double as a Mifi and that’s just LEGEN…wait for it!!…………DARY!!

barney awesome

Preware: A mojo app with backend plugin to run ipkg and fetch over the air installs and updates from the Preware ipkg feed.

Here are a few more screen shots, of Pre update(which is kinda pointless now), wifi, and what happens when an application eats memory, you get the “Sorry too many cards” error.

So leave your restrictive iphone that you have to jail break, instead of just entering the age-old Konami Code to unlock it, or your android that is worse on battery life and seemingly slower, and by a Pre, sure it’s not on GSM yet, but when it is most of you will be in luck.

Skynet will finish what Obama Started

As a last ditch effort, we should turn on Skynet right before Obama’s plans are competed.  So about this time next year, we just need to make sure to trail the start up command with “shutdown -P 15″  Just long enough for Skynet to launch the nukes but not hunt the survivors.

It’s a matter of principle.

How to add Send to Google Domain email to Google Reader with Send To Links

I loved this article on Lifehacker on how to add a “Send this story to Gmail” send to menu in Google reader, except I use Google for Domains and it doesn’t work with this.  So here is how I did it for my domain.

Replace “cpuangel.com” with your domain

Name Full Gmail

URL https://mail.google.com/a/cpuangel.com/?fs=1&tf=1&view=cm&su=${title}&body=${url}%0A%0AShort link%3A${short-url}

Icon URL http://mail.google.com/favicon.ico

If that doesn’t help, see the example below.

Enjoy!
